include development and implementation of long-term international
conservation programs for endangered lemurs and other fauna
with components of captive breeding, environmental education,
agro-forestry and reintroduction of captive-bred lemurs to the
wild; overall direction, supervision and organization of the
lemur reintroduction program; budget planning for both projects
(Ivoloina and Betampona); reports and public speaking relating
to Madagascar activities; design of Madagascar zoo facilities,
supervision of new construction and facilities rehabilitation;
development and supervision of reforestation, horticultural
and botanical components of projects; training and supervision
of Malagasy personnel; organization and participation of field
missions and capture missions in Madagascar
1987-1990

Responsibilities
included development and implementation of master plan for Project
Ivoloina; training of Malagasy staff; captures of wild lemurs
for breeding programs
Prior
to his role with the Madagascar Fauna Group and Duke University
Primate Center doing field work, Welch worked or supervised primate
departments in American zoos and was involved in a number of primate
field projects in the Americas. Welch received his degree in zoology
from North Carolina State University. Welch is a member of the American
Zoo and Aquarium Association, the Pan-African Association of Zoological
Gardens, Aquaria and Botanic Gardens, as well as the Reintroduction
Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). He is author
of numerous journal articles and scientific papers on the wildlife
of Madagascar. |
